Located along the Ligurian Riviera, Cinque Terre is a collection of five small coastal towns in northern Italy: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. If you have the opportunity, we highly recommend hiking the full path from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, stopping to explore (and maybe cliff jump) at each town along the way. This can be a bit of a time commitment though, as the full trail is roughly 7 miles (11 km) one way. If you don't have that much time to spare during your visit, make sure you still get the full Cinque Terre experience by visiting the highlights below.
The Best Way to See Cinque Terre in One Day: Full Itinerary and Travel Guide
1. Hike from Monterosso al Mare to Vernazza
Even if you don't have time for the full hike from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, make sure you still set aside some time for hiking! The trail from Monterosso to Vernazza - following Sentiero Azzurro - is one of the most popular, challenging, and rewarding trails between the five towns. Only about 2.2 miles in length (3.5 km), the trail does start off with some steep dirt stairs that lead you up the mountain, with a total elevation gain of just under 800 feet (243 m) or so.
The trails can be a bit narrow at times, and while there are rails for some portions they do not stretch across the entire length of the path. Watch your step as you go, and while there are many scenic views to stop at, pay attention to how close you get to the ledges.
Day passes for the Sentiero Azzurro cost $7.50 euros ($8.50 USD) and can be purchased at any information center or train station. If you know the day of your trip, you can also buy your pass in advance if you prefer.
2. Explore Vernazza
The Sentiero Azzurro will lead you down from the mountain and into the beautiful town of Vernazza. Adjacent to a natural harbor, Vernazza evolved into a small port & fishing village. The town was actually so accessible by water that Doria Castle and Belforte Tower were built on the sea-facing edge of Vernazza to protect against pirate attacks hundreds of years ago. Today the town is a major tourist stop, with a main street full of small markets, restaurants, and shops - and plenty of pastel back-alleys to explore & get lost in as well. Vernazza is a great place to spend some time souvenir shopping after your hike.
Grab yourself a gelato from one of the street shops and head over to the jetty to enjoy a sweet treat while watching the Mediterranean waves crash against the rocks that protect the town & its iconic clock tower from the sea.

3. Head Back to Monterosso al Mare
When you've gotten your fix of Vernazza, start making your way back to base in Monterosso al Mare. The hike is just as beautiful in reverse! If you are worn out or short on time, there is also a train that connects all five cities of Cinque Terre that you can ride back as well. 4. Visit an Italian Winery
When you're done hiking for the day, visit one of Cinque Terre's wineries! After all - did you really go to Italy if you didn't go wine-tasting? Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are also offered if that's your preference - the grape fields alone are worth making the trip.
If you're looking for something unique to the area, try some Sciacchetrà . This sweet wine is limited to the Cinque Terre region.
5. Stop for a Bite to Eat
After your drinks are done - move on to some food! Monterosso (like all of Cinque Terre) features plenty of sea-side restaurants to choose from. Classic dishes to the area of course feature some seafood, including acciughe (anchovies) and muscoli/cozze (mussels). To try some staples to the Liguria area as a whole, order some focaccia bread, limoncino, or anything with some olive oil or pesto sauce thrown on it!
6. Visit the Monterosso Beaches
There are several public and private beaches to choose from in the area, and there's no better way to cool off after a long day of hiking then jumping into the water! There's also a portion of the public beach that is essentially used as a marina, so if you're looking for a boat show - you'll find one here too.
Towards the end of the Monterosso beach coastline you can also find the ruins of Monterosso Castle and the Aurora Tower. Much like those in Vernazza, these old buildings were built to help protect Cinque Terre way back in the day.

1. Is one day enough for Cinque Terre? I would say the answer to this one largely depends on your travel style! For me personally, one day was all I had time for on my trip and felt like enough. If you would like to see all five towns and still get some hiking in, you could easily complete just one or two of the hikes and ride the train to the rest all in one day - with plenty of time for additional activities. If you have a more laid-back travel style, Cinque Terre is a stunningly beautiful place to spend your vacation days, with slight variation to explore between each town.
2. Is a day trip to Cinque Terre worth it? I'll let the photos in this post speak for themselves on this one - Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful areas I've had the opportunity to visit in Italy and I'm so glad we made the trip out to see it. I'd be surprised if you didn't think it was worth it after visiting! One thing to keep in mind if you are looking forward to hiking the Sentiero Azzurro between each town is that the trail does sometimes close, so research ahead of time whether or not it is open if this is a deciding factor in your travel plans.

The easiest & most popular hiking trail, the Sentiero Azzurro (the Blue Trail), connects all five villages through a 7.5 mile (12 km) cliffside path. The elevation gain is roughly 1700 feet (518 m) across all four sections. The amount of time it will take to hike the entire trail will vary with fitness & skill level, but it's recommended that you set aside roughly five hours to complete the hike.
